What is a Nikah (عقد نكاح)?
In Islam, the marriage between a bride and groom is a legal contract, known as Nikah.
What is required to be islamically married?
A Nikah (عقد نكاح) must be performed between the bride and groom in order to be Islamically married.
Who performs the Nikah at ICCNY?
The Nikah is performed by the Imam of Islamic Cultural Center of New York.
Does my Nikah mean I am legally married?
No. The Nikah ceremony means you are Islamically married. You are not legally married until you obtain a marriage license from your local government, or go through the dedicated processes your local government has in place to legally marry its residents.
As the bride, do I need a Wali (guardian)?
Yes.
How do I book the service and what day and time is available to conduct a Nikah?

Will I get Nikah certificate?
Yes, after the Nikah has conducted, you will receive your Nikah certificate.
Is there any fee?
Yes, $200

*Payment can be made by cash or check at the office on the same day of the ceremony. We are unable to accept Zelle or online payments at this time.

Requirements for Nikah (عقد نكاح)

  1. Mutual Agreement (Ijab-wa-Qubul)

    Both the bride and groom must willingly consent to the marriage without any coercion.

  2. Witnesses (Shuhood)

    Two sane adult Muslim witnesses must be present during the Nikah ceremony.

  3. Dowry (Mahr)

    Maher is a mandatory gift or dowry that the groom agrees to give the bride as part of the marriage contract (Nikah). it's a symbol of respect and responsibility.

  4. Guardian (Wali)

    A male guardian for the bride who gives consent on her behalf according to Islamic principles.

  5. Marriage Contract (Aqd-Nikah)

    A written marriage contract signed by the bride, groom, witnesses, and officiant.

  6. Marriage Sermon (Khutbah)

    A sermon that emphasizes the importance of marriage in Islam and the responsibilities of both parties.
